A Stage That Grows With the Place | Kochattante Kōlāyi

At KOKO, we are slowly building the Kalam. And for the stage backdrop, we didn’t want to bring in something that would simply be put up for an event and taken down later. We wanted something that would become part of the place. So we started with bamboo poles and betel leaf vines. The betel vines are slowly filling the backdrop, creating a natural green wall. On both sides, we are training pepper plants to climb up the poles. Nothing complicated. Just bamboo, plants, rope and a little patience. The best part is that it isn’t finished yet. The vines will keep growing. The pepper plants will find their way up. The backdrop will change with the seasons. That is exactly how we want KOKO to grow too. Slowly. Naturally. One little thing at a time. See it taking shape 🌿 Curious to see how the stage is coming together? Carrying a Village Story: Kochattante Kolayi and Regenerative Tourism in Kerala

A morning conversation about KOKO, Pusthakagramam and a different way of looking at tourism. This morning, I met  Shri. P. C. Vishnunadh, Hon’ble Minister for Tourism and Culture, Government of Kerala , at his office. I went there with something very simple in my hands — a small piece of  Kochattante Kolayi. KOKO started with a feeling I have had for some time. Our villages have so many stories. Stories about people, places, food, farming, traditions and everyday life. Many of them are slowly disappearing, not because they are unimportant, but simply because we have stopped telling them. KOKO is an attempt to bring some of those stories back into our everyday lives. It is not meant to be another conventional tourist destination. The idea is to create a village experience where people can slow down, spend some time, meet people, discover local stories and experience a side of Kerala that is often missed. During our conversation, I also shared an idea that is becoming important ...

The Case for Regenerative Destinations

A few years ago, when we began transforming a rubber plantation into what is now Kochattante Kolayi (KOKO), we weren’t trying to create another tourist destination. We were asking a much simpler question. Can a place become healthier because people choose to visit it? That question has quietly guided almost every decision we’ve made since. For a long time, tourism has been measured by numbers—visitor arrivals, hotel occupancy, revenue, and economic impact. These indicators are important, but they don’t tell the whole story. I’ve often wondered what happens after the visitor leaves. Is the stream cleaner than it was a year ago? Are birds, frogs, butterflies, and native plants returning? Do local people feel more connected to their village? Are traditional practices finding relevance again? Has tourism encouraged us to care more deeply for the place rather than simply consume it? These questions led me to the idea of regenerative destinations . Unlike sustainable tourism, which l...

Pushpaka Vimanam: Ancient India’s Vision of Flight | Idea Factory

Long before the Wright brothers left the ground, and centuries before we spoke of drones and anti-gravity tech, India imagined a flying chariot that could think, expand, and glide through the sky like a breeze. It was called Pushpaka Vimanam. This wasn’t a piece of science fiction. It was described in rich detail in one of India’s oldest epics—the Ramayana—as a marvel of celestial engineering, divine architecture, and poetic design. At Idea Factory, we celebrate imagination with intent. And Pushpaka Vimanam stands as a timeless symbol of how ancient India saw no boundary between science, story, spirit, and sky. 🛕 A Chariot That Listened to Thought In the Yuddha Kanda of the Ramayana, Pushpaka is more than just a flying vehicle. It’s a floating palace gifted by the gods. Built by Vishwakarma, passed to Kubera, seized by Ravana, and later used by Rama—it could expand to host armies, fly without pilots, and respond to the rider’s thoughts. It was said to shimmer with gold, bejeweled with...

Pusthakappura: The Ideation Journey of India’s Largest Book Sculpture

A Tribute to Books, Knowledge, and Perumkulam’s Identity One evening, Team Bappuji called me for a discussion about planning a year-long program following the announcement of Perumkulam as Pusthakagramam . The idea was to organize one event or program each month, leading up to a significant milestone in the 12th month—an installation that would symbolize the identity of Pusthakagramam . As we brainstormed, I instinctively reached for books from the library and began stacking them, shaping a basic structure right in the middle of our discussion. It was an unplanned moment, but the symbolism was undeniable—books, knowledge, and a shelter of wisdom. The team immediately resonated with the concept, and we decided to move forward with it. That night, I returned home and used books from my father’s collection—Dr. K Ravi Varma, an avid reader—to refine the first look of what would eventually become Pusthakappura . It was a deeply personal process, and in many ways, it felt like I was ca...

Case Study: Perumkulam - Kerala's First Book Village

Introduction Perumkulam, a serene village in Kerala, has earned the unique distinction of being the state’s first book village. Recognized for its deep-rooted literary culture, Perumkulam (also known as Pusthakagramam) stands as a testament to the power of books and the transformative potential of literature in community development. M. T. Vasudevan Nair, a legendary Malayalam writer, acknowledged this remarkable transformation, further cementing its place in Kerala’s cultural landscape. Perumkulam was officially declared as Kerala’s first book village by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in 2021. Background Situated 5 km from Kottarakkara, Perumkulam is located along the historic Veluthampi Dalawa Road. It was once a typical Kerala village, thriving on agriculture and traditional livelihoods. However, a collective vision to integrate books into everyday life has redefined its identity. The idea was simple yet powerful: make books accessible to all, instilling a culture of r...

Creativity, the river that flows within us

Creativity is like a river. It flows steadily, sometimes gently carving its path, other times rushing forward with uncontainable force. At its core, creativity is not something that can be captured, held still, or even fully understood. It is an intrinsic part of human nature, flowing freely through our minds, hearts, and imaginations. Just like a river, creativity can begin from the smallest of sources—a fleeting thought, an overheard conversation, or a quiet moment of reflection. These droplets of inspiration gather over time, merging to form the stream of ideas that shape our world. But the journey of creativity is not always a smooth one. It may encounter obstacles—boulders of doubt, dams of fear, or dry spells of uncertainty. Yet, just like a river, creativity finds a way to navigate these challenges, often emerging even stronger and more vibrant. The Flow of Inspiration Inspiration is the lifeblood of creativity. Just as the river draws its water from springs, rainfall, and tribu...

From Concept to Community: Cultural Milestones in Perumkulam’s Evolution

Presenting some of the projects I’ve ideated and executed in my native village, Perumkulam (Pusthakagramam), Kerala’s first and India’s second book village. These initiatives reflect a deep connection to my roots, blending creativity with a vision to uplift the cultural identity of the community. A creator’s life attains true significance when their work contributes to the greater good of their homeland. The journey becomes even more fulfilling when they get the opportunity to accelerate their community’s cultural legacy. 1. Radio Park Kiosk - The concept of reviving the radio broadcasts that once echoed through the Perumkulam Radio Junction was presented to the Bappuji Memorial Library. With their support in funding and logistics, a miniature version of the old, forgotten radio pavilion was created, restoring the lost voices and precious memories of the village. #radio #park #kiosk #radiojunction 2. Pusthakappura – A symbol of pride for Pusthakagramam, Pusthakappura arose from a sugge...

From Concept to Campaign: The Happiccino Counseling Branding Story

The brief was to craft a brand identity for a counseling firm named 'happiccino.' During our discussions, it became clear that the counseling process aimed to make clients feel relaxed, refreshed, and recharged, much like savoring a cup of cappuccino after a session.   Opting for a café-inspired approach, we embarked on the project.
